Welcome to Kempton Park
The area of Kempton Park used to be two Afrikaaner-owned farmlands, named Zuurfontein and Rietfontein. During the JHB Gold Rush, a railway line was constructed to connect what is now known as Pretoria and Vereeniging. The shortest route was to cut through these two farms and build a station on the Zuurfontein property, bypassing Johannesburg completely. This station quickly became a location where farmers gathered for their supplies. Eventually, as the location grew in popularity, the land of Zuurfontein was sub-divided into residential plots and named Kempten, after the German town in Bavaria. Today, it’s most notably known for hosting the OR Tambo International, Africa’s busiest Airport.
